March 2007
In the second heat of Star's 'In The Fast Lane' competition at Donington Park, open to all purchasers of the company's sliding-headstock lathes, the only woman contestant, Rhonda Bruce, received the main award for best driver of the day.
She scored over 90 per cent in every one of the disciplines, which required skill as well as speed driving an MG ZR, a Ferrari 355 and a Formula Ford at up to 70 mph around the Melbourne loop, over a slalom course, or blindfolded.
Extra prizes were awarded for the individual events, as well as for the karting competiton at the end of the day. All award winners will go forward to the grand final in June 2007, which will be preceded by a third heat in April.
Rhonda is the wife of Steve Bruce, managing director of subcontractor, Bonspiel Engineering, which uses 25 Star lathes at its Dundee plant. Steve also took part in the day's events, along with 16 other male contestants from 15 Star customers around the country.
It is interesting to imagine the conversation in the Bruce car going home. The AA advises that the 362 mile journey takes over six hours, so there was plenty of time for a little gender rivalry!
